If you are staying in South Beach lodging, public transportation in Miami is a great alternative to renting a car. Miami has a great transportation system for being the seventh largest city in the USA. In fact, according to a survey done by Walk Score in April 2012, Miami was ranked number 8 out of the top 25 best cities for public transportation. There are three parts to the public transportation in Miami: the Metrobus with over 90 routes, a 22-mile Metrorail, and the Metromover which can take you from one corner of the city to the other.

The Metrobus offers public transportation in Miami from your South Beach lodging to almost anywhere in throughout Miami-Dade and from the Middle Keys to Broward Boulevard. Additionally, the Metrobus connects with both the Metrorail and the Metromover. The city operates over 800 air-conditioned buses that travel over 90 different routes a day. Metrobus stops are marked with a green and blue sign, a bus logo and route information. Most of the routes start in downtown Miami and run between 4:30 a.m. and 2:30 a.m. during the week.

You must have exact fare when boarding. The fare box takes tokens, dollar bills, quarters, dimes, and nickels.
miami-metrorailThe Metrorail is Florida's 22.4 mile rapid train that runs from south of Miami through downtown Miami and up to northwest Miami-Dade where you may then connect to the Tri-Rail train that goes to Fort Lauderdale.   From South Beach lodging, take the Metrobus to Government Station where you can transfer to the Metrorail.  From there the Metrorail can take you to Downtown Miami’s business district, Brickell, Coconut Grove, Coral Gables and other Miami neighborhoods.

miami_metromoverThe Metromover is a great choice for public transportation in Miami. This elevated bus-like vehicle runs on a track above Miami’s downtown area. This Metromover is the main form of public transportation in Miami’s downtown area. It is a quick and easy way to get from point to point and everyone rides for free.

Metromover platforms in downtown Miami will be marked with a Metromover map at street level or near the entrance to each station. You can use the stairs, escalators, or elevator to access the Metromover platform.
